Imagine the song “the wheels on the bus go ’round and ’round, ’round and ’round, the wheels on the bus all through the town”. Now, imagine that bus is your children’s school bus on a crowded highway. You know that same highway you drive on at speeds over 60-70 mph while wearing your seat belt. Of course you’re buckled up, because its the law!
Fact: Every day, nearly half a million school buses hit the road, taking 25 million children to school. On average, five children die in school bus crashes each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). ABC News
Should Seat Belts Be Required on School Buses?
There’s nothing in this world more precious than a child, and a parent will do anything to protect them. I was shocked to learn only four states four states require kids to wear seat belts on the bus! When riding in our vehicle, my 5 & 6 year olds are both secured in booster seats with a five point harness for their safety. Sometimes I find it challenging to focus 100% on the road, without being distracted by what they just spilled in the backseat. I can’t imagine how a school bus driver can stay focused with a bus load of kids!
