My alarm went off at 7 AM this morning. Seven. Who’s bright idea was it to make kids get up at this insane hour? Wait, forget the kids, what about the parent that has to wake up the grumpy kids, get them dressed in clean clothes that semi-match, and deliver them to school on time! Back to school madness has begun!
So, here’s the thing, every year since the kids started school, I’ve made sure to get up and drive them to school on the first day. Keyword here is: first day of school. In the past, their Dad has driven them to school in the mornings and I would pick them up…you know around 4 in the afternoon, a much more reasonable time of the day,
But, things have changed. The kids and I have moved out. We’ve left Houston and moved to Dallas. We have new digs and they have a new school. And for now, I have the sole responsibility of dropping off my 1st and 2nd grader to school. On time… everyday…before 8 AM!!!! Madness. Insanity.
Adjusting to early mornings is going to take some time. This morning went relatively smoothly, well except for the burnt toast. And yes, my feelings were a little hurt when I asked Hunter if I could walk him to his classroom and was shot down with, “I’m a big boy.” Ouch little man, those words sting!
I guess my daughter felt sorry for me, because when I drove around to her side, she asked me to walk her inside. She even posed for a photo with her new teacher.
My kids are growing up, and I am too. We’re still adjusting to our new surroundings and a change in circumstances, but we love adventures. I’m definitely ready for new experiences with these monkeys, but I can’t say the same about these 7 AM mornings.
Stay tuned for more updates and the story of our move. Oh and if you have tips on how to make school mornings easier, please, please, please share them.
