I know a Houston staycation in the middle of summer doesn’t sound very glamorous or exciting. But, what if we were talking about a night at one of Houston’s trendiest hotels with a Princess? Okay, maybe not a real Princess. Shh…don’t tell my 5 year old daughter she’s not really royalty. Because when your Mom (me) says, “How would you like to spend the night in a fancy hotel and enjoy a special dinner?”, you definitely receive the royal treatment.
I’d stayed at the Hotel Sorella CityCentre before, and knew it was a hip Houston hotel with the perfect Houston staycation spot. I didn’t know, it was also a family friendly property. In my mind, Hotel Sorella was the perfect place for a romantic getaway. Seriously husbands take note! If you want to surprise your wife, take her to dinner at The Capital Grille CityCentre, then surprise her with a room for the night! Major brownie points. MAJOR!
Anyway, this isn’t about romance. This is about some quality time with my daughter, before her first year of school. Mini me and I checked into our room, and decided a quick swim before dinner was mandatory. I thought the cabanas were calling my name, beckoning me to kick back and relax. Nope, that was my little girl saying “Mommy, mommy, watch me swim. Watch me jump. Watch me splash.” So, dear Hotel Sorella cabanas, I was not ignoring you, and would love a rain check….with a cold umbrella drink please.
Yes, there were other kids enjoying the pool. There were also couples relaxing in the cabanas, enjoying poolside service from the Monnalisa bar. The sun set too quickly on our pool time, and we had to return to our room to primp for dinner. This is when I laughed. My daughter hopped into the shower first, and stayed, and stayed, and stayed! Apparently she was taken with the rainfall showerhead, and wanted to stay forever. Okay, so who can blame her?
After dinner we sat outside on the hotel patio, and enjoyed the live music in the CityCentre plaza. The patio is the perfect spot to sit and enjoy the evening above the crowds. When our food comas kicked in, we headed back to our room. Rooms at the Hotel Sorella CityCentre have a very Zen like feel, and some of the best hotel pillows. EVER! Heavenly pillows, luxurious linens, a large shower, 37 inch plasma TV, and floor to ceiling windows. Why does anyone ever check-out? No seriously, why?
The next morning my daughter was sleeping soundly, wrapped like a Mummy in those sheets. I hated to wake her, but not as much as I hated to miss the Hotel Sorella’s continental breakfast. They have the biggest and freshest complimentary continental breakfast of any hotel I’ve ever visited. Large bowls of fresh berries, melon, pastries, yogurt, cereal, granola bars, and of course coffee. Did I mention they also offer complimentary cappuccino and espresso? So, it’s easy to see why my daughter, and I felt a bit like royalty….we were being spoiled.
I might have felt slightly guilty my hubby and son were at home, sleeping on hard beds and eating Fruit Loops. Okay, not really. This summer I traveled a lot for the blog, and being able to share a Houston staycation with my daughter was a welcome break. She’s growing up, and there’s nothing I can do to slow it down. Instead, I can look for ways to spend one on one time with both my kids. Yes, son, the next special Houston trip is for you.
Our Houston staycation by the numbers:
