The last time I bought a vehicle was about seven years ago. It seems so odd that I walked onto a dealer lot, looked at the SUVs, found one that checked all the boxes, took it for a quick spin, and then spent hours and hours filling out paperwork to complete my purchase. That’s almost like marrying a person hours after you’ve met for the first time. When the marketing folks at Ford introduced the media to the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum, they knew it had so many features, it needed more than a traditional introduction.

So, the crafty folks at Ford orchestrated the perfect seduction under the guise of a media launch. Of course they didn’t label it as such, they just called it the Ford Explorer Platinum Adventure Tour. I guess “Two Days to Fall In Love With The Explorer Platinum”, or “25 Ways You’ll Love The Explorer Platinum” might have been a little too bold. Anyway, I was one of the lucky few to be chosen to #ExploreMore as part of a nine city tour across the country.

My adventure started in Bozeman, MT where we met the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum for the first time. The event kicked off with vehicle facts and figures, and they reminded us the Ford Explorer has been the best-selling SUV in America for 25 years. They re-designed the 2016 Ford Explorer with its legacy in mind. The exterior is rugged yet refined, while the Platinum interior surpasses expectations with premium materials used throughout.

2016 Ford Explorer Platinum Tour Hits The Road

With the sun still rising over the mountains, we hit the road from Bozeman to Jackson Hole, Wyoming through Yellowstone. We used the nifty power fold to stow the third row seats, and loaded our luggage into the back. Our mission: put the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum through its paces, while enjoying one of the most beautiful places on earth. And…I think the small print said something about not allowing bison, bears or other wildlife to damage the new Explorer.

With a chill in the air, I had the perfect excuse to test the heated Nirvana leather seats, and the leather wrapped heated steering wheel. I should note, while I had the option of getting a personal massage from my seat,  I saved that for later in the day. My partner followed our highlighted route, while I oohed and ahhed over the real aluminum and real ash wood used on the door panels. Ford designers managed to refresh the 25 year old SUV and give it a premium feel that’s also stylish.

Industry First Premium Sony Sound System

No road trip is complete without an amazing soundtrack, so we cranked up the “industry-exclusive” premium sound system from Sony, and headed towards Yellowstone. This ain’t your normal factory sound folks! Sony put 12 speakers in the family SUV for a total of 500 watts. In fact, Sony designers conducted over 100 hours of research in concert halls in Berlin, Amsterdam and Vienna. The result: one of the best OEM sound systems I’ve experienced!

Hey Mom friends, forget hiding out in the bathroom with your glass of wine and some headphones begging Calgon to take you away, now you can go for a drive in your 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum….or just sit in the driveway, crank up the sound and enjoy some ‘me time’.

Driving through Yellowstone we alternated between cruising the speed limit and stopping for “Bison Jams”. Apparently, wildlife isn’t required to “share the road”, nor do they use crosswalks or designated areas. The 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine was smooth and steady as we climbed mountain passes, navigated tight curves, crossed the Continental Divide a few times, and passed those brave enough to ride bikes through the park.

When you drive over 200 miles in one day, by the end of the trip you either love or hate your ride. As the sun was setting, we arrived at our final destination in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the verdict was in. The 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum is a luxurious SUV ready for adventure, but also capable of handling my everyday Mom life. I know the kids will appreciate the extra legroom in the second row, and the dual panel moonroof.

We couldn’t drive the Ford Explorer to Grand Prismatic Spring, so we took our Ford Raptor there instead.

Ford thought of everything in the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum, and made it easy on their customers when it comes to pricing and options. Super easy, once you decide you want the most luxurious Ford Explorer, the choices come down to color and second row seat configuration. Which means you’ll pay $52,970 for a 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum, unless you want yours in white platinum or ruby red, or bucket seats in the second row. Those options will cost you a little more. And if you’re like me, you’ll add the DVD headrest ($1,995) for those long family road trips.

Thank you Ford for including me on this one of a kind launch of the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum. Ford paid my airfare and expenses, but my opinions can’t be bought!
